- Capability is the maximum power output of the system at any one point in time. A megawatt (MW) is a measure of power, like horsepower. A typical, conventional light bulb uses 100 watts of power. A megawatt is one million watts.

- Peak demand is the greatest amount of electric power required at any one point in time during the year.

- System demand is the amount of power used over the year, as measured in kilowatt hours (kWh). (A 100-watt bulb burning for 1 hour uses 100 watt hours or 0.1 kilowatt hours. Ten light bulbs burning for an hour would use 1 kWh. Your home electricity bill is measures in kilowatt hours.)
